SLEEP POSITIONS ...

... What do they mean and how to get the perfect night sleep?

When it comes to sleeping, the chances are that you ignore what you do to go to sleep. That is until you find it hard to drop off. You toss, and you turn, and you seemingly move all around in a variety of positions until you find the perfect one for you and drift off to sleep.

We don’t all sleep in the same way or the same position. This is where the idea of sleep positions come from. But what are they, and how are they essential to get a perfect nights sleep?

Sleep Positions

What are sleeping positions?

As the name suggests, sleeping positions are the positions that we lie in when trying to sleep or sleeping. Not everyone will look every way of sleeping, and there are those of us who have a go-to that they rely on to get a good nights sleep.

You may even find that a sleeping position that you have been used to for some time is no longer something that you can manage due to health issues, for example.

What are the different sleep positions?

The most popular sleeping position has to be the fetal position. Ideal for those who have lower back pain, it is also thought that this particular sleeping position can reduce snoring. That said, you need to make sure that you leave yourself enough room for deep breathing, as this can be an issue with this sleeping position, and you can also feel stiff in the morning.

Another option for a sleeping position is to sleep on your side. If you sleep on your left side in particular, you reduce how much you snore, and you also help your body with digestion.

One of the least favourite ways to sleep for many people is to lie on their stomach. Not only does it cause strain within your muscles and your joints, but it can cause neck and back pain. That said, this sleeping position is often recommended for people who have sleep apnea.

Finally, we have to lie flat on your back. This is one of the best positions to sleep in as it protects your spine and helps if you have hip and knee pain. It also helps your skin too, as it keeps it away from your pillow.

The downside of this choice is that sleeping on your back can cause snoring to be worse and those who have any back pain already.

If you don’t sleep in your preferred sleeping position, or things change for you, then you may find that you wake up feeling in pain or aching, particularly in your neck and back. Not only this, but if you cannot get in the correct position, you can find it hard to get to sleep or stay asleep once you are asleep. Neither of which you are going to want very much.

This means that it makes sense to learn more about which sleeping position is right for you and make sure that you are in that position as regularly as possible.
